Very true. Of course, the question is how much of the praise Wreckers gets actually applicable to the series. I mean, sure, it was a bunch of obscure characters thrust into tons of carnage. That's awesome in a juvenile sense--that's the kind of thing I would do. But I've seen people who say that was basically Wreckers' *only* positive attribute, and that's just not true.

O6 is right that "Last Stand of the Wreckers" is often praised for the wrong reasons.

Additionally, I have to wonder how much praise the series would get from outside the fandom. it is a legitimately good series. But, just as comics are often praised for the wrong reasons in some quarters, they may lose points for the wrong reasons in others.


Short comic reviews:

Transformers (Nefarious) #5:
A bunch of stuff happens. The most notable thing I can think of as I type this is that it looks like Armorhide's character model changes between panels. The only reason I am not cancelling my subscription to this is that it only has one issue left at this point.

Avengers Academy #2:
This is technically part of "Heroic Age", but I actually bought it owing to DvD's review. The high concept of the series is that the Avengers are trying to prevent troubled teens with powers from becoming super criminals. Given how long "Thunderbolts", a series with a similar concept, has lasted, it is a safe bet that "Avengers Academy" will survive in the long term. This issue shows a few of the kids debating the pros and cons of being faces or heels. That being said, while I am not going to be adding this one to my pull list, it is not the worst book to pick up as filler.

Green Lantern #56
Hal Jordan goes looking for Larfleeze, while someone sets Hector Hammond free and directs him towards Larfleeze as well. Fights ensue between the Orange Lantern and the others, and in the end Hammond ends up with the orange power battery, transforming him. As if he wasn't weird enough already!

One of the things I enjoyed about the Blackest Night issues was seeing long-time, well-known DC characters being seen in a different light thanks to them joining one of the various lantern corps. It will be interesting to see if we learn anything new about Hector Hammond or the other characters based on the events of this issue. Larfleeze continues to amuse, being the embodiment of greed... in his desire to get new stuff, he's writing to Santa Claus, and refuses to believe that Santa doesn't actually exist.

The Flash #4
Despite the fact that I still find the Rogues a bit silly, and future police Rogues just as absurd, I'm enjoying the storyline largely thanks to the characterization of Barry Allen. His serious and no-nonsense attitude, his love for his wife, the way he takes a moment to admire the view while pulling off some super-speed feat... all of this adds up to the type of character I enjoy reading about. And the art is great. It's really one of the big draws of the book as far as I'm concerned. The plot is still taking some time to unfold, but there's a decent infodump by one of the future Rogues that puts a lot of things in perspective.

The connection to "Brightest Day" is tangential at this point. Captain Boomerang has the ability to manifest exploding zombie boomerangs, something he doesn't bother to question. He's displayed no other symptoms so far. I've no doubt that will change down the line. As it is, I prefer that all the tie-in books tell their own stories so I'm not forced to buy tons of crossovers in order to follow the story.

I'm almost, almost as interested in the Green Lantern movie as I am in the comics, so I haven't watched the trailer or anything. If Dex-Starr's in it, I'll happily look at pictures of him from the movie and be okay with that.

But man, just watched the trailer for Thor, and oh, man. I am down with that. Bring me a movie with Vikings hitting things with hammers, and some crazy ass Jack Kirby technology brought to onscreen life, and I'm a happy guy. Seriously, the Destroyer? That thing looks just like the comics. Looks great, but man, it'll be a looooong wait until May.

They haven't released a trailer for the Green Lantern movie yet, so it'd be weird if you had seen it... So far all they've shown is a few promotional photos/posters. Being the first GL movie, I'm sure the focus will primarily be on Hal becoming a Green Lantern. I'd be surprised if they have any other Corps in it.

They haven't? I coulda sworn. Then again the Thor trailer hasn't been released yet either, and I've seen that one. So maybe the trailer I've heard of is one of those "leaked SDCC" things?

But focusing on Jordan still equals easy pass for me on this one.

Well I guess they did show something for Green Lantern at SDCC, but as I understand it, it was more of a voiceover teaser that didn't actually show much footage from the movie. And I haven't seen that it's leaked online like the Thor trailer did.

I don't know what else you'd expect from the first movie in a franchise... Of course it's going to focus on Jordan, he's the title character. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it personally. Green Lantern is easily my favorite comic book these days. And Thor I'd have to say looking pretty good. I think the Marvel guys have been doing a good job with their movies lately.

There are supposed to be quite a few other alien Corps members in it. Sinestro is a major character, and Abin Sur and Hector Hammond are in the story. I think the movie's starting point is largely based off the Secret Origins arc from a few years ago.

Well, of course, the thing with Green Lantern, there's loads of guys that could well be the title character. It's not like it says "Hal Jordan: Green Lantern". The Justice League cartoon was able to just skip over Jordan and go to Stewart, and that seemed to work out pretty well.

Or, like, Alan Scott! An Alan Scott movie, that might be interesting.

Not that I really expected either of those things, of course. But yeah, easy pass for me on this one.

Yeah, this. At least the Avengers-related movies, anyway. And the X-Movies, I guess, those have been surprisingly good. And the Spidey Franchise, that's worked out well, even if I'm the only person that like Spidey 3. So yeah, good on them. And even though the Punisher movies are pretty much complete crap, they're entertaining complete crap.

But you know, it's still disappointing to me that the Fantastic Four movies were so frigging horrible. How can something go THAT wrong?
