andersonh1 wrote: Fri Jul 23, 2021 11:31 amI just finished watching Voyager and that final episode. I just kept thinking that "middle aged" Tom Paris really doesn't look like he actually turned out in real life, but then that's always true when they put these guys in old age makeup. Take a look at "The Deadly Years" from the original series for another example.
Yeah, it's interesting to see how they guess at how someone might age using makeup, and to then see them when they reach that age in real life. They did a pretty good job with Kate Mulgrew though. Aside from the hairstyle, she looks fairly close to her Admiral Janeway appearance.
The Picard writers gave us Troi and Riker still happily married and generally living a quiet life (though the writers couldn't resist the drama of a dead son), so they might have let Tom stay married and responsible and living a quiet life. I would certainly hope so.
But that's the thing, they couldn't resist giving Troi and Riker a dead kid and that's the whole reason they were living on an isolated planet in this series and Riker was on a leave of absence from Starfleet (and Troi? They never said if she's still in Starfleet or not). They did the same thing to Seven by (brutally) killing off Icheb, causing her to become somewhat of a vigilante. Despite Data being dead already, they (inexplicably) sorta bring him back by having his consciousness in a computer to make photocopies of his neurons or whatever, just to kill him off again by shutting it down. Picard was miserable after Starfleet called his bluff by allowing him to resign. No one has a happy story in this series. Given this trend, if Paris were to be in Picard, I'd expect them to kill off his daughter causing his marriage to fall apart, and he'd end up living as a swindler on a casino planet.

The first Star Trek: Prodigy trailer is online, and gives us our first look at the ship for the series, the USS Protostar, NX-76884.

I kinda like the design of the Protostar. The giant windows on the bridge seems odd, but otherwise, it's a nice design. Unfortunately, it raises a lot of questions that doesn't make sense in terms of the story... Prodigy takes place in the Delta Quadrant, in the year 2383, five years after Voyager returned home. Having an NX registry, it would seem to be a prototype/first of its class. So... How did it end up in the Delta Quadrant? Was it another ship pulled into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker, or some other anomaly? Or is it equipped with a new drive system, which would contradict "Hope and Fear", in which Voyager was able to decode a message from Starfleet telling them they had no propulsion methods to reach them. Or could it have been built after Voyager returned home? And why would it be equipped with a hologram of Captain Janeway? Did Voyager encounter this ship at some point? If it was built after Voyager returned, it wouldn't make sense for it to be Captain Janeway, as we saw in Nemesis, she got promoted to Admiral. Maybe these are questions they will address in the series... but I'm not seeing how they'll make sense of all of it in terms of the story of Voyager.

Speaking of Tom Paris, he gets a cameo of sorts in the new season of Lower Decks...

Tom Paris commemorative plate? Really? I get Lower Decks tends to be meta with a lot of their jokes and references, but why would that exist in the Star Trek universe? It's cool that they brought in Robert Duncan McNeill to (sort of) reprise his role, but having him voice a commemorative plate... It just take me out of the narrative.

Interesting to see a Tamarian in a Starfleet uniform. I guess since the Enterprise's encounter with them, the language barrier isn't such an issue anymore?

The first episode Lower Decks season 2 is available to watch for free on YouTube, for a limited time.

Doesn't seem to have improved since the first season. The references they make still come off like parody, and it's still not funny. Who is this meant to appeal to?

Fans of Rick and Morty. Except they fucked it up and this show isn't anywhere near as deep or clever as R&M.

I watched the free first episode of s2 Lower Decks, and it's still not funny. It's reasonably entertaining since it's free, but I think the reason it doesn't work is because the writers are giving us no reason to care about the regular characters. If I don't care about the characters, I don't care about what happens to them. Even in an ostensible comedy, an attachment to the characters and their lives is what keeps people coming back, in my opinion. There are exceptions, but Lower Decks isn't one of them.

Found out Robert Duncan McNeill voices more than just the commemorative plate in Lower Decks. Apparently Tom Paris himself actually visits the Cerritos. Dunno why Tom Paris would be visiting the Cerritos though. I guess the show explains he's on a tour, sharing stories about his time on Voyager... Why though? He doesn't really do much in the episode to my understanding either. He ends up beating up Boimler when he mistakes him for a Kazon. No mention of B'elanna, or their daughter, or why he's still in a Starfleet uniform.

Come to think of it, does the series explain why the Cerritos crew have uniforms that look somewhat like TNG era uniforms? It seems odd when they show other Starfleet personnel wearing the newer gray shoulder uniforms that became the standard after First Contact.... Which would be several years old by this point of the series. Oh who am I kidding, these creators just wanted to bank on viewers nostalgia. That's basically all this show is. Callbacks and easter eggs from other, better series.

The opening credits to Star Trek: Prodigy has been posted on Paramount Plus's Youtube page.

Seems very reminiscent of Discovery's opening credits to me. Couple notes of the classic Star Trek theme right at the end... Which is nice, but I think Voyager's theme would have been more appropriate.

These credits also gives us a first look at something the Protostar can do... Similar to Voyager, the nacelles can move into another position, and the engineering hull opens up revealing... another engine? I'm hoping this is some experimental new drive rather than it's standard warp drive. It could explain how the ship ended up in the Delta Quadrant.

The extended cast of "Strange New Worlds" is announced.

https://www.engadget.com/star-trek-stra ... 13184.html

I was hoping to see more of the characters from the original pilot like Dr. Boyce or Jose Tyler. On the other hand, it's a nice surprise to see a young Uhura, and Doctor M'Benga, who was only in two episodes of the original series I believe. With Nurse Chapel on the show, two of Majel Barret's characters are on the same ship, albeit played by different actors.

I've only seen Anson Mount as Pike on that free episode of Discovery and on some of the Short Treks, but I liked him in the role. Ethan Peck bears no resemblance to Leonard Nimoy and doesn't seem like Spock at all to me. Rebecca Romjin is fine in the role. I won't subscribe to Paramount + for this show, but I'm curious enough to watch it at some point. I just hope they cut the profanity like we saw in Picard, but I doubt they will.
