Infestation discussion

Ancillary, non-main-line stuff. Star Wars TF, Speed Stars, Titanium Series, Robot Heroes, that sort of thing. They're kinda neat, but we all know they're not really that important. Admit it, you know it's true.

I think it is being split into 2 volumes, meaning you cannot get just one series.

Yeah, even the compilation is being obnoxiously marketed.

Infestation #2:

And....it sucks. Big fight with zombies and a bunch of shit happens. If not for the info dump at the beginning saying "oh no, the Overmind has tech and stuff from 4 other universes", there would be nothing about this issue to indicate that it was part of a cross-over. And, whoever wrote the inside cover's infodump apparently did not bother to read the cross-overs, where the native characters all managed to fend off the zombie attacks. The info dump describes those universes as being on the brink of disaster.

The "not really an ending", (which is not at all predictable for this genre), will be limited to "Zombies v/s Robots", and seems intended to encourage, if not compel, that book's readers to pick up "Infestation". Apparently, IDW was destermined to make sure that as few people as possible could avoid this train-wreck.

I cannot think of anything I have read since "Countdown" ended 3 years ago that has been this bad. And, even "Countdown" at least has the benefit of being artfully bad. "Infestation" was just awful on so many levels, and seemingly without trying to be.

Transformers: Despite having a creative team that could have easily done better, (and likely earns this part of the story a fair amount of undeserved praise), this was easily the worst of the lost. It was nothing more than a lead-in for Abnett's and Lanning's "Heart of Darkness" series, and it intruded on plot points from the main book, making it the hardest chapter to avoid.

Star Trek: Suprisingly, the best of the lot. It managed to combine two properties that never should have been combined, preserving what was key about both, and keep the whole mess self-contained. Kudos to the Tiptons.

GI Joe: While not as bad as "Transformers", it committed many of the same sins. But, like "Star Trek", it felt like a modern Joe book, which may or may not be a compliment.

Ghost Busters: The most credible cross-over was hindered by muddy art. It was also the only one of the 4 to show that Britt was successful in acquiring technology from any of the 4 other universes. (Apparently, she was successful in the other 3, at least according to issue 2.) All things considered, this is probably the most forgettable of the 4.

Grade: F
